Number (in millions) of Persons with Diabetes Aged 35 Years and Older with Self-Reported Cardiovascular Disease Conditions, United States, 1997–2007

Cardiovascular disease affects millions of adults with diabetes and is a major cause of morbidity and mortality among persons with diabetes. Between 1997 and 2007, the number of persons aged 35 years and older with diabetes who reported being diagnosed with a cardiovascular disease condition (i.e., coronary heart disease, stroke, or other heart condition) increased from about 4 million to almost 6 million. Of the nearly 6 million with diabetes and cardiovascular disease in 2007, 3.9 million reported being diagnosed with coronary heart disease (self-reported coronary heart disease, angina, or heart attack) and 1.6 million reported being diagnosed with a stroke.
