Age-Adjusted Percentage of Adults Aged 60 Years or Older with Diagnosed Diabetes Who Needed Assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADL),* by Sex, United States, 1997–2008
From 1997 to 2008, the age-adjusted percentage of adults aged 60 years or older with diagnosed diabetes who needed assistance with ADL was higher among women than among men. Among women, the age-adjusted percentage who needed assistance with ADL increased from 10.3% in 1997 to 14.0% in 2004, a relative increase of 36%, and then leveled off. Among men, the age-adjusted percentage who needed assistance with ADL showed little change from 1997 to 2001, then decreased from 8.2% in 2001 to 5.7% in 2005, a relative decrease of 30%, and finally leveled off. In 2008, the age-adjusted percentage of women who needed assistance with ADL was nearly twice that of men (13.2% vs 7.0%).
