State-Based Diabetes Prevention & Control Programs
Montana
The
Montana Diabetes Prevention and Control Program (DPCP) has received funding
from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention since 1994. Activities
supported by the Montana DPCP include the following:
- Collect, analyze, and distribute data on diabetes. To gain
an understanding of the burden of diabetes in Montana, the Montana DPCP
has analyzed Medicare and birth and death record data; this has been
in collaboration with the Montana-Wyoming Foundation for Medical Care,
the Health Care Financing Administration, and the University of Montana
as well as surveillance information generated by the Behavioral Risk
Factor Surveillance System. This quantitative assessment has been supplemented
by information from focus groups of people with diabetes and their families,
health care providers, third-party payers, and the general public.
- Public awareness programs on preventing complications. The
Montana DPCP has developed public awareness programs emphasizing key
points of prevention such as regular eye exams and physical activity.
A pilot in diabetes education conducted by community pharmacists and
supported by culturally sensitive print materials was successful in
reaching Havre-area residents who use diabetes medications or supplies.
- Community-based interventions. The Montana DPCP is implementing
a community-based program based on the "Diabetes Today" course
on the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation and plans to extend the
program to urban Native American populations. Community leaders are
actively involved in addressing the disproportionate burden of diabetes
among their people.
