State-Based Diabetes Prevention & Control Programs
Federated States of Micronesia

The Federated States of Micronesia (Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, and Kosrae) Diabetes
Control Program (FSM DPCP) has received funding from the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC) since 1994. As a core-capacity funded program,
FSM DPCP will harmonize and coordinate diabetes and chronic disease efforts
in the nation. Some examples of its activities follow.
-
Screening. In collaboration with the Preventive Health and
Health Services Block Grant, the DPCP conducted a screening in 1994
for diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and other chronic disease risk
factors.
-
Education. The DPCP serves as a clearinghouse for educational
information for people with diabetes and health care providers.
-
Nutrition. The DPCP helps the states of Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei,
and Kosrae to integrate nutrition into school curricula.
-
Diet. The DPCP helps the states collect and give out information
about the adverse effects of some lifestyles and of consuming foods
high in saturated fats.
-
Public awareness. The DPCP promotes public awareness about
the seriousness of diabetes and its complications.
-
Collaborations. The DPCP collaborates with other health and
educational programs to promote diabetes awareness. In 1994, it initiated
a working partnership with the Teacher-Child Parent (TCP) Program
funded by UNICEF; this partnership integrated good nutrition habits
into local school curricula by having parents, teachers, and students
be the key players to implement the program.
-
A Micronesian One-Diet-Fits-All-Today (MODFAT) menu containing
lists of healthy local foods was designed and adopted by the local
hospitals as the diet menu for patients.
-
The DPCP collaborates with the Micronesian Seminar,
a local research pastoral institute to produce videotapes with diabetes
control messages in languages and with cultural characteristics pertinent
to the Federated States of Micronesia.
-
Clinics. Each of the states conducts clinics at
certain times of the week. Patients are counseled on diet and physical
activity, and have a general physical exam to help them understand
their susceptibility to diabetes and other chronic diseases. Patients
are then referred to health care providers for appropriate care, if
necessary.
