State-Based Diabetes Prevention & Control Programs
Northern Mariana Islands
The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands Diabetes Prevention
and Control Program (DPCP) has received funding from the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) since 1994. Activities supported
by the Mariana DPCP include the following:
- Maintain diabetes prevalence registry. A registry of about
1,500 persons receiving diabetes care provides prevalence data by
age, sex, ethnic group, insurance coverage, and complications. The
registry provides the best information about the burden of diabetes
among the Chamorro and Carolinians, the Marianas indigenous
population>
- Educate diabetes patients. A support group was established
for patients attending the diabetes clinic. The group meets regularly
tor discuss diabetes and ways to improve self-management of the disease.
- Enhance community understanding and awareness. The DPCP initiated
a diabetes awareness and education program for the media, private
industry, local politicians, and lay person leadership.
- Educate medical providers. The Mariana DPCP sponsored a workshop
for public and private medical providers on the results of the Diabetes
Complications Control Trial and their implications for preventive
care strategies and practices of care for people with type 2 diabetes.
