State-Based Diabetes Prevention & Control Programs
Idaho
The
Idaho Diabetes Prevention and Control Program (DPCP) has received funding
from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention since 1994. Activities
supported by the Idaho DPCP include the following:
- Surveillance. The Idaho DPCP is using the Behavioral Risk Factor
Surveillance Survey (BRFSS) to determine the impact of diabetes on the
residents of the state. Surveillance activities continue and include
investigation of BRFSS, and birth certificate and Medicare data.
- Awareness and education activities. These activities are promoted
to Idaho residents using the educational services available in the health
districts. The Idaho DPCP uses focus groups and surveys to assess its
education and awareness activities and evaluate improvements.
- Collaboration. The DPCP collaborates with other agencies and
groups to provide diabetes education for health care professionals.
The Idaho DPCP collaborates with the American Diabetes Association (ADA)
on National Diabetes Month (November) promotions throughout the state.
Contracts with the state district health departments also require local
activities and each district has individual plans to promote National
Diabetes Month. District health departments also participated in ADA
Walktoberfest activities.
- Outreach to minorities and underserved populations. Diabetes
services in Idaho are centered primarily in the more populated areas
of the state leaving large areas underserved. Also, many in the states
minority populations are rural, seasonal, or migrant residents. Idaho
also is home to four tribes of Native Americans. The Idaho DPCP is working
to improve health care services for these populations.
- Diabetes Alliance of Idaho. This statewide coalition has members
from all the ethnic populations and works to improve insurance coverage;
win passage of legislation to improve health care and financial coverage
for diabetes education and supplies; promote diabetes education to health
care professionals and the general public; and increase resources for
diabetes education and awareness.
