Native Diabetes Wellness Program (NDWP)

Grantees

Nooksack Indian Tribe (Washington). Program title: Listen to the Elders: Healing Nooksack Health through History. The tribe is working to promote health and help prevent type 2 diabetes among tribal members by promoting interest in and availability of traditional healthy diets and related physical activity. The Healthy People 2020 health indicators of physical activity, overweight and obesity prevention are guiding the program to achieve the goals within the cultural context of traditional foods and historical activities. In addition to engaging tribal members in cultivating tribal gardens, dances, canoe pulling, and indigenous games, oral histories about traditional foods are being gathered through storytelling and other media.
