Spatial Geometry
The geographic database used in this publication came from the
Environmental Systems Research Institute's (ESRI's) ArcUSA database,
which includes spatial geometry and characteristics of all U.S. counties.
ESRI modified the 1973 Digital Line Graph source data produced by the U.S.
Geological Survey to update county boundaries through 1988. The geographic
scale of the spatial geometry (i.e., linework) used is 1:2 million, which
is sufficient to identify major county features. Mortality and population
data were linked to county geography using FIPS codes.
