Vermont Cancer Registry

Evaluating state cancer control efforts with registry data is a work in progress. The Vermont State Cancer Plan, a strategic plan to reduce the impact of cancer on individuals, families, and communities in Vermont, was updated in April 2010. It includes the following objectives—

• Reduce the rate of breast cancer diagnosed at an advanced stage among women aged 50–74 years. Source: Vermont Cancer Registry (VCR)
• Reduce the rate of cervical cancer diagnosed at an advanced stage among women aged 20 years and older. Source: VCR
• Reduce the rate of colorectal cancers diagnosed at an advanced stage among men and women aged 50 years and older. Source: VCR
• Reduce the percentage of cases reported to the VCR at an unknown stage. (American Joint Commission on Cancer). Source: VCR
• Increase the percentage of women with breast cancer whose treatment at Vermont cancer centers meets or exceeds American College of Surgeons (ACoS) Commission on Cancer standards. Source: National Cancer Data Base (NCDB)
• Increase the percentage of men and women with colorectal cancer whose treatment at Vermont cancer centers meets or exceeds ACoS standards. Source: NCDB
• Increase the percentage of cancer survivors seen at Vermont cancer centers who live five years or longer after diagnosis. Source: NCDB

This successful use of cancer registry data—

• Markets the value of cancer registration.
• Evaluates cancer control along the continuum of care: early detection, treatment, and survivorship.
• Integrates the Commission on Cancer and the National Program of Cancer Registries at the local level.
• Integrates hospital cancer registry data and NCDB data into cancer control and evaluation efforts.
• Identifies disparities in cancer treatment in rural vs. urban settings by using population-based data.
