section 3 The Interviewing Process Go to End of Previous Section Go to Next Page 1 of 24

Overview

In this section, you will learn about the interviewing process, the "nuts and bolts" of what you will be doing as a BRFSS interviewer. You will first be introduced to the entire BRFSS process, from the time a yearly questionnaire is developed to the time when the data you collect are published. You’ll see why it’s important to try to contact people at different times of the day and different times of the week. Then you will go step-by-step through CATI, the computer system that you’ll be using to conduct interviews. Lastly, you will learn about the measures that are taken to assure the quality of BRFSS data.

After completing this section, you will be able to do the following:

  1. Understand how data collection fits into the entire BRFSS process.
  2. Explain why calling occasions are important.
  3. Recognize the screens of the CATI system.
  4. List and describe the measures taken to ensure quality and minimize error.
