Research Initiatives to Enhance Behavioral Surveillance

Research Initiatives to Enhance Behavioral SurveillanceA challenge for CDC’s Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) is effectively managing an increasingly complex surveillance system that serves the needs of multiple programs while adapting to changes in communications technology (e.g., increased use of cellular telephones), adjusting to changes in populations of people, and incorporating advances in sampling methodology. To address these challenges, CDC’s Division of Behavioral Surveillance (DBS), in collaboration with states and other stakeholders, conducts research to assess and enhance data quality and to investigate the impact of new sampling approaches and protocols for behavioral surveillance. These ongoing research efforts are critical to improving the quality of BRFSS data, reaching populations previously not included in the survey, and expanding the usefulness of the surveillance data. Examples of current research and development initiatives are described on the pages linked below.
