Statistical Software
for Analysis of BRFSS Survey Data
Two analytic courses are being offered on Saturday, March 9, 2002. Both courses are designed to provide public health professionals with data analysis alternatives-specifically, ways to analyze data and obtain accurate results without using SUDAAN. Registration and fee information for the courses can be found on the conference registration form.
Using SAS 8.2 to
Analyze BRFSS Data
8:30 to 11:30 AM - March 9, 2002
Two new PROCS in SAS can be used to analyze sample survey data: SURVEYMEANS and SURVEYREG. SURVEYMEANS provides descriptive statistics for continuous and categorical variables and has some of the capabilities of CROSSTAB, DESCRIPT and RATIO in SUDAAN. SURVEYREG performs linear regression and has most of the capabilities of REGRESS in SUDAAN. SAS 8.2 uses Taylor Series linearization as the method of variance estimation.
In this 3-hour course participants will use SURVEYMEANS in SAS 8.2 to perform descriptive analyses with BRFSS data and interpret results. Participants will learn how to
Prerequisites: Some experience in SAS and in analysis and management of BRFSS data.

1:00 to 4:00 PM - March 9, 2002 STATA is a general statistical software package that includes a comprehensive set of procedures (16 total) to analyze sample survey data. Its capabilities for sample survey data analysis are similar to those of SUDAAN. STATA uses Taylor Series linearization as the method of variance estimation. In this 3-hour course, participants will use svyset, svydes, svymean, svyprop, svytotal, svytab and svylc in STATA 8.0 to analyze BRFSS data and interpret results. Participants will learn how to
Prerequisite: No STATA experience necessary. Experience in analysis/management of BRFSS data.
