About Provider Outreach
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Arthritis Program developed this marketing guide to facilitate the use of direct-to-provider outreach to promote community-based chronic disease self-management education and physical activity classes. Although these non-drug interventions for chronic disease have been shown to reduce pain, increase mobility, and improve quality of life, participation rates remain low and most primary care providers (PCPs) are not aware that these valuable treatment tools are available in their communities.
To help public health programs and community-based organizations boost local class enrollment the CDC Arthritis Program, in collaboration with the Directors of Health Promotion and Education, conducted research with PCPs and their office staff to discover strategies for increasing awareness of the interventions and encouraging PCPs to recommend them to their patients. Using the findings from this research,CDC developed a marketing guide to help you plan and implement a provider outreach initiative in your state or local area.
Why Provider Outreach?
Pharmaceutical companies typically use a strategy called “pharmaceutical detailing”—face-to-face outreach with health care providers—to market their products. Universities and other non-commercial organizations have adapted this strategy as “academic detailing” to reach out to providers with evidence-based information for managing a variety of health conditions. Your marketing team can use the detailing model to effectively promote arthritis self-management interventions to primary care providers in your community.
