Overview of BRFSS arthritis question changes 1996–2012

1996–2000Same six questions used
2001Question on type of arthritis dropped and replaced with “Have you EVER seen a doctor, nurse, or other health professional for these joint symptoms”?
2002Essentially all of the questions change
20034 question (optional) Arthritis Management Module added
2005Work for pay question dropped
2007No further changes
2009New questions are added (arthritis impact on work for pay, pain severity, and social participation)
2010Arthritis case finding question added as an optional module. Depending on which states use the module it may allow analysis of arthritis and anxiety/depression, emotional support and life satisfaction, sleep, falls, veteran’s status, use of preventive services.
2012Arthritis case finding question added as a core question during even numbered years.
