Chapter 24: State-specific Surveillance of Vaccine-preventable Diseases

This Manual for the Surveillance of Vaccine-Preventable Diseases provides general guidance to state and local health department personnel who are involved in surveillance activities for vaccine-preventable diseases. The manual provides answers to commonly asked questions regarding the surveillance and reporting of vaccine-preventable diseases. However, each state or jurisdiction has specific laws, regulations, and logistics for disease reporting.

Immunization information systems (IISs, or immunization registries) also vary by state, but when available, they have become a useful source of surveillance data for patient vaccination histories., Public health personnel should  include their IIS among the sources of information used to collect and report on vaccination history for cases of vaccine-preventable diseases.

Each state or jurisdiction is encouraged to publicize and disseminate its own specific guidelines for surveillance and reporting of vaccine-preventable diseases along with the information in this manual.
