You Can Quit Smoking
Number of Smokers and Number of Smokers Who Have Quit
- In 2006, 45.3 million adults (20.8%) in
the United States were current smokers—23.9% of men and 18.0% of women.
An estimated 70% of these smokers said
they wanted to quit.
- An estimated 19.9 million (44.2%) adult
everyday smokers in 2006 had stopped smoking for at least 1 day
during the preceding 12 months because they were trying to quit.
- An estimated 45.7 million adults were former smokers in 2006,
representing 50.2% of those who had ever smoked.
