Social Media Campaigns

In the last few years, CDC developed a number of integrated social media campaigns, including campaigns for the novel H1N1 flu event, the Salmonella Typhimurium outbreak associated with peanut butter and peanut-containing products, as well as annual seasonal influenza vaccination campaigns. Each campaign integrates innovative social media products with research-driven strategies to ensure that CDC protects and promotes the health of diverse audiences.

Current Campaigns

Novel H1N1 Flu (Swine Flu)

Keep 'em home!

In April 2009, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) began working together to provide consumers and partners with social media tools that provide information about the ongoing novel H1N1 flu outbreak. Widgets, mobile information, online videos and other tools to facilitate electronic communities, networks, and interactivity, and to encourage information sharing, collaboration and creativity.

CDC provides many of social media tools in Spanish. For the novel H1N1 flu, CDC developed a number of interactive products in Spanish, including widgets, podcasts, and buttons.

Peanut Butter & Peanut-Containing Product Recalls Related to Salmonella Infections

I checked my cupboards for recalled products!

During the Salmonella Typhimurium event of early 2009 and the associated recalls of numerous peanut butter and peanut-containing products, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) worked together to develop an integrated social media campaign. The goal of the campaign was to provide consumers and partners with social media tools to access up-to-date information about the recalls.

Seasonal Flu 2008 –2009

For the last several years, CDC planned various social media activities to encourage people to "Get Vaccinated!" and to raise awareness about preventing the spread of seasonal flu.
