Eligibility
Applicants should have a strong interest in a leadership and management career in public health.
To apply for PHPS, you must
- Meet both the educational and work requirements
- Be willing to commit to a 3-year full-time program
- Be willing to relocate
- Be a U.S. citizen
Educational Requirements
- Master’s degree in public health or management related fields from an accredited college or university
- Academic achievement in areas of
- Epidemiology/biostatistics
- Biological, physical, and environmental sciences
- Behavioral and social sciences
- Health education and promotion
- Management and administration
Work Requirements
You must have at least 2,080 hours of paid public health work experience. This is the equivalent of 1-year, full-time work. Multiple paid work experiences qualify. Work experience can include paid internships, externships, and fellowships.
Examples of paid, public health work experience include, but are not limited to
- Special project coordinator in a health department
- Graduate student researcher or research assistant in a school of public health
- Community disease investigator
- Health education specialist
- Program coordinator for a community-based public health organization
- Program consultant for a non-profit public health organization
- Health educator in the Peace Corps
Program Timeline

Application Process
Apply online. Mail supporting documents at least 2 weeks before the deadline.
Submit your application early. You can only track receipt of supporting documents after submitting your application.
Supporting Documents
The PHPS office must receive supporting documents by February 15, 2010. You may want to consider submitting all supporting documents together. You can only track receipt of supporting documents after submitting your application.
Letters of Recommendation
- Three letters of recommendation are required
- Select persons who are familiar with your academic or employment achievements, future aspirations, personal qualities, and professional attributes
- Provide these persons with a copy of the Request for Letter of Recommendation
(1 page; 38 KB). This completed form must accompany the letter of recommendation - At least one recommendation must be from a supervisor
- E-mailed or faxed letters are not acceptable
Transcripts
- You must provide official transcripts for all degrees you have earned
- If transcripts are not issued by a U.S. institution, other proof of degree completion (e.g., a diploma) must be submitted. Transcripts and proof of degree completion must be translated into English
- If you are currently completing a master's degree, submit your current transcript by the deadline. If you are accepted, the PHPS office must receive your final transcript by August 4, 2010. If the PHPS office does not receive your final transcript by this date, the office will revoke your acceptance to the program
- High school transcripts are not required.
Deadlines
- Deadline for submission of the online application and for receipt of all supporting documents.
- If you are completing a master's degree, deadline for receipt of your final transcript.
