This issue of Preventing Chronic Disease includes articles on the components required for health and well-being. The cover image shows many of the building blocks that make up a holistic concept of health, including mental, spiritual, physical, and social influences. The World Health Organization defines health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Well-being is a condition in which the whole is more than the sum of its parts; an individual healthy behavior, no matter how consistently maintained, may not affect overall health. However, when that behavior combines and works in concert with other healthy behaviors, optimal health can be achieved.
