簡介
爲籌劃、實施和評估用於改善美國少數民族群體健康狀況的計劃,公共衛生官員和研究人員需要有效和可信的健康監視資料。但在此類人群中監控慢性疾病和行爲危險因素較爲困難。本項研究評估了人種、種族和語言隔離對於行爲危險因素監視系統(BRFSS)參與率的影響。

方法
使用2003年BRFSS調查和2000年美國人口普查中縣級的資料,檢查人種、種族和語言隔離對調查參與情況的六個衡量指標的影響(即辨識率、篩選率、合作率、應答率、語言障礙率和拒絕率)。 

結果
在黑人和不說英語人群百分比較高的縣,參與比例明顯較低。在黑人居民最爲集中的郡,其應答率比幾乎沒有黑人居民的郡低了4.6%。同樣,在只說西班牙語或另一種印歐語系語言的人口百分比較高的郡,其應答率比所有居民都說英語的郡低了大約7%。

結論
考慮到BRFSS是以西班牙語和英語開展調查,只說西班牙語家庭的比例與參與率的負相關關係令人不安。調查結果還表明需要做更多的工作以改善其他少數民族的參與情況。研究者們正在調查幾種應對參與率不相等性的方法,比如使用調查後調整、制定文化更爲適當的資料收集程序以及提供多種語言的調查。
