Reference Diagnostics

The WHOCC-Plague provides many diagnostic and reference services for outbreak investigations, routine surveillance activities or research projects. These services include:

  • Isolation of Y. pestis from submitted samples.
  • Identification of suspect Y. pestis isolates.
  • Molecular typing and characterization of Y. pestis isolates.
  • Presumptive identification of Y. pestis in samples by PCR, fluorescent antibody assays, or immunohistochemical assays.
  • Analyses of serological samples.
  • Antimicrobial susceptibility testing.
  • Production and distribution of diagnostic reagents, including serology kits, conjugate for fluorescent antibody assays, and bacteriophage-lysis strips for phage typing of plague strains.
  • Identifications and analyses of flea vectors, other ectoparasites, and mammalian hosts of plague.
