Past Program Activities, 2003–2008

From March 2003–February 2008, the Oregon Department of Education received funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to promote coordinated school health, provide HIV prevention education, and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).

Past Program Activities

Addressed Asthma

  • Expanded the Asthma Friendly Schools demonstration project to five new schools that will use a CSHP approach to address asthma.
     
  • Provided a year-long, five-session training program for Asthma Friendly School staff on how to use a CSHP approach to address asthma.
     
  • Collaborated with the American Lung Association of Oregon to assess relevant policies adopted by school districts across the state.

Promoted Coordinated School Health with an Emphasis on Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Tobacco Use Prevention (PANT)

  • Provided a year-long, five-session training program on coordinated school health planning and implementation to increase the number of schools that use a CSHP approach to address health risk behaviors that lead to chronic disease.
     
  • Evaluated schools that have adopted and sustained a CSHP approach to address student health and are providing technical assistance to address the identified needs.
     
  • Implemented a standards and assessment training using Health Education Standards in the Classroom for health education and elementary classroom teachers.
     

Provided HIV Prevention Education

  • Implemented regional workshops on preventing HIV, STDs, and unintended pregnancy to showcase effective, research-based curricula; provided information and skill-building opportunities on elements of effective prevention education; and promoted the adoption by school districts of effective classroom strategies to address HIV prevention.
     
  • Convened a working group to continue implementing the HIV Prevention for Incarcerated Youth strategic plan, which includes training for Oregon Youth Authority staff on culturally specific HIV/STD prevention education.

Conducted the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Collaborated with the Department of Health Services to implement the YRBS.
     
  • Implemented a workshop for school administrators and School Board Association members to share the YRBS data and provide strategies and tools for using the data to inform decision making.
     
  • Provided technical assistance to school districts regarding interpretation and use of the data for program planning and evaluation.
