Charlotte-Mecklenburg, North Carolina — 2003–2008
From March 2003–February 2008, Charlotte-Mecklenburg
Schools (CMS) in North Carolina received funding from CDC’s Division of
Adolescent and School Health to develop and implement an asthma prevention
program and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).For information on

Past Program
Activities
Addressed Asthma
- Increased the number of schools with a school health team.
- Developed a sustainable, cost-free program through Respiratory
Consulting Therapists, Inc., to provide respiratory therapists as a
resource for students with asthma.
- Developed an Asthma Action/Emergency Plan for three-quarters of the
high-risk student population for the current school year.
Conducted the Youth Risk Behavior Survey
- Collaborated with the Mecklenburg County Health Department to
collect data that are representative of Charlotte-Mecklenburg youth in
grades 9 –12.
- Distributed information collected from the YRBS to members of the
school health consortium, appropriate school staff, the Mecklenburg Health
Department, and community-based organizations to develop timely goals
and priorities for improving the health of adolescents.
- Maked YRBS surveys and related marketing information available on
the school Web site.
