Association of State and Territorial Health Officials*

ASTHO is the national nonprofit organization representing the state and territorial public health agencies of the United States, U.S. Territories, and the District of Columbia. ASTHO’s mission is to formulate and influence sound national public health policy and to assist state health departments in developing and implementing programs and policies to promote health and prevent disease.

ASTHO's Program in Action

ASTHO is supported by DASH in collaboration with the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion and other Centers at CDC.

  • Collaborating with national policy organizations focused on physical activity and nutrition in schools, including Action for Healthy Kids, to provide guidance and technical support to local and state education agencies and school food authorities regarding School Wellness Policy requirements.

  • Producing a resource to highlight the success of the 2005–2006 National Governors Association initiative, Healthy America: Wellness Where We Live, Work and Learn. This resource includes examples of the impact that state-based Healthy America initiatives have had on populations in schools, work sites, and communities.

  • Serving as an advisor for national level organizations working on planning and policy activities to prevent chronic diseases among youth and supporting school-based health programs and policies.
