Talking Points

Students who like and feel connected to their school are less likely to experience emotional distress and suicidal thoughts; less likely to drink alcohol, carry weapons, or engage in other delinquent behaviors; and more likely to cooperate and help each other. To encourage connection, schools can develop policies and practices that create a supportive climate and foster development of prosocial norms in the school community, for example, disapproving of bullying or promoting helpful acts. Involving faculty, staff, students, families, and community members in all aspects of school management can also promote connection.
