Talking Points
The first guideline is to establish a school social environment that promotes safety and prevents unintentional injuries and violence. The first guiding principle states that a safe school is one that ensures high academic standards. Strategies for promoting academics include:
- Ensuring that school leaders promote the academic success of all students;
- Establishing a strong academic mission statement;
- Establishing academic support mechanisms (for example, counseling, tutoring, or mentoring); and
- Providing opportunities for all students to experience success, for example, through athletics, drama, school-to-work experiences, or community service.
