Talking Points

This table shows some things schools are doing to try to prevent violence. Most elementary, middle/junior, or senior high schools use staff or volunteers to monitor halls and bathrooms. Focusing on senior high schools in the right hand column, you can see that nearly half of all senior high schools routinely check student bags, desks, and lockers for contraband. Nearly one-third of senior high schools employ uniformed police to patrol their campuses. And nearly one-quarter use surveillance cameras. Only 1 in 10 senior high schools requires uniforms or uses metal detectors.
