Talking Points

There is no national reporting system for school-associated injuries or violence, and only a handful of states have voluntary or mandatory reporting systems. So these data are based on different national and local studies.

Injury is the most common condition treated by school health personnel. Between 10% and 25% of child and adolescent injuries occur on school premises. This means that about 4 million children and adolescents are injured at school each year.

Most school injuries are unintentional, not violence-related. The most frequent causes of school-associated injuries resulting in hospitalization are falls, 43%, sports activities, 34%, and assaults, 10%. This is 9 unintentional injuries for every violence-related injury.
