Talking Points

Let’s look at some data about adolescent violence. From 1990 to 1998, the adolescent homicide rate dropped 28%. Even with this drop, however, U.S. children still suffer disproportionately from violence. The U.S. child homicide rate is 5 times higher than that of 25 other industrialized nations combined. In 1995, 1 in 10 16- to 19-year olds was the victim of a violent crime, more than 100,000 adolescents were arrested for violent crimes, and nearly 3,000 were victims of homicide.
