Louisiana Activities to Prevent Healthcare-associated Infections

CDC and the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals have entered into a data use agreement. The state health department will gain access on a quarterly basis to data reported to CDC’s National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) from healthcare facilities in the state. The new provisions are designed to allow data access solely for the purposes of surveillance and prevention.
The following data are being requested by the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals:
- Central line-associated bloodstream infections in all critical care locations
- Surgical site infections for colon and hysterectomy procedures (inpatient procedures only)
- Catheter-associated urinary tract infections in all critical care locations
- Ventilator-associated pneumonia in all critical care locations
- Dialysis events from outpatient dialysis facilities
- MRSA and C. difficile Lab ID events from all inpatient locations (FacWideIN)

- State health department and hospital association are involved with a CUSP initiative to prevent CLABSI and/or CAUTI.
- State has implemented two CLABSI Prevention Collaboratives.
