HIV Diagnoses Among Adult and Adolescent Hispanics/Latinos

Overall, 25 diagnoses of HIV infection diagnoses per 100,000 population occurred in Hispanics/Latinos in 2008 (the most recent year for which data are available). While this rate represents a decrease from 2005-2007 data (26.6 per 100,000 in 2005; 25.6 in 2006 and 26.4 in 2007), the number of individuals diagnosed has increased during these years.

Data are from individuals diagnosed with HIV in the 37 states and 5 dependent areas with name-based HIV reporting since since January 2005. In 2008, of the estimated 8,238 adult and adolescent Hispanics/Latinos diagnosed with HIV, 79.6%, or 6,557, were adult or adolescent males, of which 69.1%, or 4,533, were among males who had sexual contact with other males. Among adult and adolescent females, 15.5% of the diagnoses were among injection drug users and 83.7% among those who had heterosexual contact with persons known to have, or to be at high risk for, HIV infection.
