Number of Deaths for Hyperglycemic Crises as Underlying Cause, United States, 1980–2005

Diabetic hyperglycemic crises, including diabetic ketoacidosis and hyperglycemic hyperosmolar state, are serious, acute complications of diabetes that can lead to death. The number of deaths due to hyperglycemic crises was stable in 1980s and then began to decrease in the 1990s. In 2005 hyperglycemic crises caused 2385 deaths, 20% lower than the 3012 deaths in 1980.
