Providing Data for the Maryland Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan

Maryland Cancer Registry

The Maryland Comprehensive Cancer Control Program requested data from the Maryland Cancer Registry (MCR) to allow the Cancer Plan chapter committees to develop their objectives and write their chapters for the Plan. The MCR provided data to the following committees—

  • Burden of Cancer in Maryland
  • Breast Cancer
  • Tobacco-Use Prevention/Cessation and Lung Cancer
  • Ultraviolet Radiation and Skin Cancer
  • Prostate Cancer
  • Cervical Cancer
  • Environmental/Occupational Issues and Cancer
  • Cancer Surveillance
  • Colorectal Cancer
  • Cancer Disparities

In addition to providing data, the registry staff answered questions from the committees and provided expertise in cancer data. As the committees developed their chapters, additional data was provided per the group's requests. Many chapters developed goals and objectives that will use MCR data to evaluate outcomes. For example, the Breast Cancer chapter includes a goal to reduce the incidence of breast cancer in Maryland to 96.5 per 100,000 by 2015. MCR data will be used to measure progress toward this goal.

The Maryland Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan will use the following six implementation committees—

  • Primary Prevention
  • Early Detection and Treatment
  • Survivorship/Pain Management/Palliative and Hospice Care
  • Policy
  • Disparities
  • Surveillance and Evaluation

These committees will see that action is taken to meet the objectives set forth in the plan, and will evaluate the objectives and revise the chapters as needed. This allows Maryland's Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan to respond to changes that occur with the cancer burden in Maryland on an ongoing basis, rather than every five years.

By providing ongoing reviews and updates of the chapters and objectives, the Maryland Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan becomes a living document that can respond to new ideas and treatments as they come forth.
