BRFSS POLICY MEMO 97.5
Probing "Hispanic" Responses to Race Question

When a respondent replies "Hispanic" to the question "What is your race?", interviewers are to probe for one of the listed race categories. An appropriate probe is "Are you white-Hispanic, black-Hispanic, Asian or Pacific Islander and Hispanic, American Indian or Alaska Native and Hispanic, or other race and Hispanic?" Only if they reply "other race and Hispanic" after probing should they be coded "other" race.

When a respondent replies "Hispanic" to the race question, the following question "Are you of Spanish or Hispanic origin?" may be coded "yes" without reading the question.
